General

The Safer Places Network is Australia's Community Safety Network — a free, community-led initiative that connects residents, businesses, and law enforcement to create safer communities.

We provide multiple ways to participate:

  • Register your CCTV cameras to help police quickly find evidence
  • Register your dashcam to provide mobile coverage throughout the community
  • Become a member without cameras to receive local crime alerts and be a contact point for emergencies
  • Report community safety reports through our secure platform

Our mission is to work together for safer communities through a privacy-focused approach to community safety.

No, the Safer Places Network is an independent, community-led initiative founded by a former Victoria Police Detective with over 15 years of law enforcement experience. While we work closely with law enforcement agencies and partner with Neighbourhood Watch Victoria, we are not a government or police program.

Our independence allows us to focus on both community safety and individual privacy in a balanced approach while providing an essential and cost-effective service to law enforcement agencies.

The Safer Places Network helps fight crime in multiple ways:

  • Camera Registry: Police can quickly identify CCTV and dashcam locations near incidents, reducing evidence collection time by up to 90%
  • Community Awareness: Members receive vetted alerts about local incidents, helping them stay vigilant
  • Observation Sharing: Residents can safely report suspicious activity that gets shared with relevant community members
  • Deterrent Effect: Criminals become aware of the comprehensive safety network in the community
  • Resource Efficiency: With over 1,000,000 police hours in Victoria alone spent collecting CCTV footage each year, our system allows those resources to be redirected to active patrols

The Safer Places Network is completely free to join. There are no hidden costs for any of our services — whether you're registering cameras, joining as a member, or sending community safety reports.

We also have premium paid plans available for individuals and businesses that want additional features and support, but the core services that connect communities and police remain free for everyone.

Crime Stoppers and Safer Places Network serve complementary but different purposes:

  • Crime Stoppers: For reporting suspected crimes anonymously to police. Reports go directly to law enforcement but, importantly, local communities aren't informed
  • Safer Places Network: For community safety awareness and prevention. We share vetted observations with local members, maintain a camera registry for police, and keep communities informed

If you've witnessed an actual crime, report it to Crime Stoppers or call 000. If you want to share community safety reports with your community and help police find additional witnesses and evidence faster, use the Safer Places Network.

Basic registration requires:

  • Your name, mobile and email address
  • Your address and postcode
  • How you want to participate (cameras, dashcam, member only)

If registering cameras, we also ask for:

  • Number of cameras and their brand
  • What areas they can see (street, driveway, etc.)

If registering a dashcam, we ask for:

  • Dashcam brand and features
  • Regular parking locations (optional)

The entire registration process takes less than 60 seconds.

By joining the Safer Places Network, you:

  • Receive local crime alerts to stay informed about safety in your area
  • Help police solve crimes faster by making evidence easier to find
  • Become part of a verified community working together for safety
  • May qualify for insurance discounts for proactive security measures
  • Help redirect police resources from evidence collection to active patrolling
  • Get access to vetted safety information without social media chaos
  • Can be contacted by police in emergencies affecting your area

Membership

Absolutely! You don't need cameras to be part of the Safer Places Network. As a member without cameras, you can:

  • Receive local crime and safety alerts for your selected suburbs
  • Be a contact point for police during area emergencies
  • Report community safety issues or suspicious activity
  • Stay informed about what's happening in your community

Many of our members don't have cameras but still play a vital role in community safety through awareness and vigilance.

Our crime alert system keeps you informed about safety in your area:

  • Suburb Selection: Choose which suburbs you want to monitor (your home, work, parents' house, etc.)
  • Frequency Options: Receive alerts daily, weekly, or monthly based on your preference
  • Verified Information: All alerts are triaged and verified before distribution — no rumours or unverified claims
  • Relevant Content: Only incidents relevant to community safety are shared

Unlike social media crime pages, our alerts are factual, respectful, and focused on awareness rather than speculation.

Yes! During registration, you can register any combination of:

  • Home or business CCTV cameras
  • Vehicle dashcams
  • Multiple properties with cameras
  • Multiple vehicles with dashcams

You can also add or remove cameras and dashcams at any time through your member dashboard.

Dashcams provide unique value to community safety:

  • Mobile Coverage: Your dashcam captures footage throughout the community, not just at one location
  • Traffic Incidents: Often the only witness to hit-and-runs, road rage, or traffic crimes
  • Wider Area: Can capture evidence far from where you live or work
  • 4 Million Strong: With 4M+ dashcams in Australia, we're building comprehensive mobile coverage

Registering helps police know you might have captured crucial evidence while driving through an incident area.

Privacy

Absolutely not. The Safer Places Network does not have access to your live camera footage.

We only maintain a registry of camera locations. You maintain complete control over your footage and decide if and when to share it with police.

You choose which cameras to register. We recommend only registering cameras that face public or semi-public areas like:

  • Streets and sidewalks
  • Driveways and front yards
  • Business entrances and parking areas

Indoor cameras or cameras in private areas like backyards don't need to be registered. Remember, we don't access your footage anyway — registration just lets police know you have cameras (anywhere).

We take data protection extremely seriously:

  • All personal information is encrypted using AES-256 encryption
  • Your data is never sold to third parties
  • All communications use SSL/TLS encryption
  • Access is strictly controlled and limited to authorised personnel
  • Full audit trail of any interaction with your data visible in your account
  • Compliance with Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic)

Our system was designed with "privacy first, usability second" as our core principle.

Access is strictly limited:

  • Camera Registry: Only verified law enforcement personnel with two-factor authentication
  • Crime Alerts: Only sent to members who've selected specific suburbs
  • Your Information: Never shared publicly or with commercial partners/entities
  • Audit Trail: Every access is logged and visible in your account

The registry is not available to the general public, other government agencies, or commercial entities.

All observations go through our verification process:

  1. Submission is reviewed by our triage team
  2. Relevant, factual information is extracted
  3. Personal details and speculation are removed
  4. Verified information is shared with members in affected suburbs where appropriate
  5. No unverified claims or rumours are distributed

This ensures communities stay informed without the problems of social media crime pages.

Yes, you can remove your information at any time:

  • Login to your account and select "Delete My Account"
  • Contact us via email to request removal
  • Call our support line for immediate assistance

Your information will be permanently deleted within 30 days per our data retention policy.

Technical

We support all types of security cameras and dashcams:

Security Cameras:

  • Doorbell cameras (Ring, Nest, Arlo, etc.)
  • Standalone security cameras
  • CCTV systems
  • Wired and wireless cameras
  • Cloud-based and locally recorded systems

Dashcams:

  • All brands (Garmin, Thinkware, BlackVue, Viofo, etc.)
  • Front-only or front/rear configurations
  • With or without parking mode
  • Any resolution or storage type

No, the registration process is designed to be simple:

For security cameras, just know:

  • How many cameras you have
  • What brand they are (or select "Other/Not Sure")
  • What areas they can see

For dashcams, just know:

  • The brand (or select "Other")
  • Whether you have rear camera and parking mode

No technical specifications required — registration takes under a minute.

No, registering has zero impact on your equipment:

  • We don't connect to your cameras or dashcams
  • No software installation required
  • No bandwidth usage
  • Battery life unaffected
  • All settings remain unchanged

We simply record that you have cameras — we don't interact with them.

Police Interaction

Police use our system to quickly find potential evidence:

  1. Search for cameras/dashcams near an incident
  2. See what types and coverage areas exist
  3. Contact owners through our secure system
  4. Request relevant footage if available

For dashcams, they might contact you if your regular routes pass through an incident area.

For members without cameras, police might send area alerts or emergency information.

No, sharing footage is voluntary unless police have a warrant.

Registration simply makes police aware you might have relevant footage. You always maintain the right to decline.

Most members choose to assist when they have footage that could help solve crimes in their community.

Generally, no. You're not responsible for criminal activities captured on your cameras.

Best practices include:

  • Position cameras to monitor your property, not neighbours' private areas
  • Follow manufacturer installation guidelines
  • Consider posting surveillance notices
  • For dashcams, follow road rules while recording

Consult a legal professional for specific liability concerns.

Always verify identity before sharing footage:

  • Police contact through our system is verified
  • For direct contact, ask for name, badge number, and station
  • Call the station's published number to confirm
  • Request official ID for in-person visits

Legitimate police never pressure for immediate footage without proper identification.

If you capture a crime:

  1. For emergencies, call 000 immediately
  2. Report to police or Crime Stoppers
  3. Secure/backup the footage

Being registered means police may contact you proactively when investigating area crimes.

If footage becomes evidence, you might provide a statement but rarely need to appear in court.

Many insurers offer discounts for security measures. We recommend:

  • Contact your insurer about security camera discounts
  • Provide your Safer Places Network certificate
  • Ask about "community safety program" discounts
  • Mention both cameras and network membership

We're working with insurers to establish formal discount programs for members.
